Who are you upsetting? Who are you connecting? Who are you leading?

Then Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, “This is the thing which the LORD has commanded: (Numbers 30:1)

Yesterday morning, Michael Stay sent me an email with a link to a profound video with Seth Goodin talking about tribes. This was in follow up to our strategic planning meeting on May 14.

Seth says we are living during a major transition with how ideas are shared and spread. We are in a new model of leadership. Changes are no longer made with money and power. Tribes are what matter now. It’s tribes that can change our world, not because they force people but because people want to connect. Assemble tribes that assemble tribes that becomes a movement.

Seth then asks, “Who are you upsetting? Who are you connecting? Who are you leading?”

Most movements are about finding a group that’s disconnected, but already has a yearning. Change comes by affecting the “who” not the mechanics of what you are doing. People are waiting for you to lead them.

Tribe Leaders …
1) Challenge the status quo
2) Build a culture
3) Connect people to one another. More than anything else, people want to feel missed.
4) Commit to the cause, to the tribe, to the people who are there.

Challenge: Do something. It only takes 24 hours to create a movement.

I ask You to help me assemble a modern-day Gideon army, a tribe, to inspire people around the world to the greatness You designed them for. Thank You Jesus for being my Shepherd, for making me lie down in green pastures, for guiding me in the steps of righteousness and leading me for Your own name sake. Anoint me from the heavens. Anoint me from the Holy Temple. Anoint me from Zion, O Lord.

Wow! Wow! Wow! If I took the time to share a fraction of all that God is doing, I’d be writing for a week.

The “One Month To Live” series that Matt Gregory just led the congregation at Soul Purpose Church through has had a profound impact on me.

As I mentioned in my April 20 devotional, one of the three assignments on Day 1 was this, “Without thinking too hard or too long, make a list of five things you’d change about your life if you knew you only had a month to live. Choose at least one to begin changing today, right now.”

Well I wrote down my list of 5 things to do if I had only one month to live. And that brought laser focus and very purposeful action. I’ve been able to say “no” to lots of things I shouldn’t be doing. I’m well on my way to accomplishing all 5 of those things. Amazing. God has really honored this commitment with major breakthroughs.

Yesterday, Matt concluded this 5 week sermon series with a message titled “Leave Boldly!” He addressed 3 questions:

1) What will be the center of my life?
2) What will be the character of my life?
3) What will be the contribution of your life?

What is your exit status?

1) I’m ready to leave boldly. I know Jesus and have made a valuable contribution with the life He has given me.

2) I’m ready to leave, but not boldly. I know Jesus, but I have unfinished business.

3) I’m not certain of my status. I’m not sure I know Jesus or have completed what He wanted me to do with my life.

4) I am not ready. I do not know Jesus nor have I completed His purpose for my life.

March 3 was the most profound day of my life!

During the weekly Marching Through Culpeper prayer call on March 10, Virginia Morton shared with our prayer team of 9 people that the keyword the LORD gave her for this week is TURNAROUND. God is a God of turnarounds. Virginia said she was drawn to the book of Esther and this week we focus on the story of Esther.

As mentioned in my YDB devotional sent earlier on March 10 titled “Organizing Your Life,” 94 people registered for Lynne Lee’s webinar interview of me and 34 people showed up live for the inaugural launch of her Christian LIFE Coaching Cafe on March 3.

In my last devotional message on October 27, I mentioned I’d be sharing a series of connected stories to show how life coaching is opening the door to connect Virginia and Liberia intimately.

I shared how formal coaching of my son Robbie in the Fall of 2007 opened the door for him to not only become a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, but to live in that fraternity house for his senior year during the 2008-2009 academic year at UVA.

As Tony Stoltzfus says, “Coaching is a relationship that’s future-oriented. It works on your internal motivation. It’s personalized, and it creates a structure for your growth. In summary, a coach is a person walking with you to empower you to reach your own goals.”

Last weekend (Saturday October 25), Julia and I went to Charlottesville Virginia for “Parent’s Weekend” at UVA. Beta had planned an open house at the fraternity at Noon. Because of a variety of unplanned circumstances, Julia and I didn’t get to the Beta house until 2:30 pm.

Because it rained, most parents and Beta members remained at the frat house for hours instead of going to the “Lawn” by the Rotunda for afternoon activities as planned. That gave me the opporunity to connect with lots of different people intimately. During one of my conversations with a group of 5-6 people, someone asked me if I was planning to come to the Beta open house in March or April 2009. Without hesitation, I said “If I’m not in Liberia.”

As it turned out this out-of-the-blue response opened a door to share my story of how God connected me to Sam Reeves, Rim of Grace Ministries, and Operation Rescue Liberia. I mentioned that a group of us from Culpeper went as guests to the Liberia Embassy in Washington D.C. in May 2008 and that the deputy ambassador committed to have the President of Liberia come to Culpeper.

That prompted Sean Douglas, the President of Beta, to ask if I could get the President of Liberia to come to the Beta house. I told him I thought that was very possible. As I spoke those words, an UNCOMMON idea popped into my mind, namely to ask John Casteen, the President of UVA, to invite the President of Liberia to speak to UVA students, faculty, and administrators at the 16,000 seat John Paul Jones Arena in early 2009.

Tony, a UVA sophomore and member at Beta, spoke to me afterwards and offered to spearhead this initiative. I was extremely impressed by this young man’s responsibility, maturity, vision, and faith.

I’m quite sure Governor Tim Kaine will come to this event and that will seal a formal tie between the heads of state for Virginia and Liberia. And what I find particularly interesting is that Thomas Jefferson, the founder of UVA and the author of the Declaration of Independence, might well have been a leader in the movement in the 1820′s by people in Virginia to establish the nation of Liberia as a safe-haven for freed slaves.

Tomorrow I’ll share some interesting news about the President of Liberia. Stay tuned!

For the past few days, we have been taking a look at ideas. On July 1, I came across a brand new blog post by Mac Anderson, founder of Simple Truths, titled “Reward the Gift of Imagination.” Here is what Mac shared:

One of the most amazing things about business (and life) is the power of one idea. And one of your greatest challenges as a leader is to understand how to find and nurture them.

One of the great myths in life is that most breakthrough ideas come from scientists with advanced degrees. While that is true for some industries, most new ideas come from ordinary people with what I’ll call “fertile minds” – minds that are always curious and looking for better innovations. “Fertile minds” are not plentiful in most organizations, but they do exist and it is up to the leaders to identify, reward, and cultivate the gift of imagination. For most leaders, however, imagination goes against the grain, because new ideas can rock the boat and cost money. I’d like to share with you some of my favorite examples of the power of one idea.

Howard Schultz was inspired by a trip to Italy and came back inspired to be the first coffee shop in the United States to focus on, of all things…coffee.

For years, Dunkin Donuts’ sales would slow in the summer, until someone thought…let’s add ice cream. A simple idea that increased sales dramatically.

• McDonald’s only served lunch and dinner in all their stores until some maverick franchisee had the courage to ask customers if they’d like to have breakfast at his store. Their answer was yes, and you know the rest of the story.
• Fred Smith, the founder of Federal Express, did a research paper in a business class on the feasibility of starting a “next day delivery business.” His professor acknowledged his “off the wall notion” with great skepticism, but with Fred the creative juices had begun to flow.
• In 1951, Kemmons Wilson took his wife and five kids on a vacation. He was so frustrated by the second-rate accommodations available for families that he decided to open his own hotel that was clean and never charged extra for children. Plenty of doubters predicted failure because there was nothing like it at the time. He decided to call it “Holiday Inn,” and by 1979 he had the largest hotel chain in the world with 1,759 hotels in more than fifty countries, and sales of over $1 billion.
• I remember it like it was yesterday. In 1985, we had a small publishing company selling quotation gift books. I had always liked quotes and the books were selling well. However, one night after work, I was talking with friends, and out of the blue the thought occurred to me: “people really like quotes, wonder if they’d want to put them on their walls?” From that Successories was born.

This simple concept not only applies to business leaders, it applies to leaders in all areas. For example, Notre Dame’s legendary football coach Knute Rockne took his team to a New York stage production for relaxation prior to a big game. While watching the chorus line, Rockne conceived the idea of a new offensive formation that gave him a great advantage over his opponents, and eventually revolutionized the game of football.

I could cite hundreds of other examples where one simple idea made a powerful, positive impact. Remember, keep your mind open and reward the gift of imagination in your organization.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. (Isaiah 55:8)

As mentioned numerous times in the past, the Internet is God’s supernatural highway of communication. In other words, when the Holy Spirit authors a message, He is responsible for the results. However, since I began using a new type of online journal in the UNCOMMON Journaling for Destiny course, I’ve begun experiencing a variety of new revelations and breakthroughs from INCOMING ideas off the web.

Listen!!! One idea can completely change your life! One day of favor from the LORD can be worth more than a lifetime of labor.

Early on Saturday morning June 8, the Holy Spirit prompted me to do a Google image search using the word “leverage” to design a new poster (see below). One of the first images I discovered led me to Daniel Sitter’s blog called “Idea Sellers.” The slogan for that is “Everybody Sells… either their products or ideas.”

In his August 30, 2007 blog titled “Thwarting Your Success Nemesis,” here is what Daniel states:

Each of us has an enemy, not necessarily one of a spiritual nature, but a physical being capable of  stopping us at every turn. He or she has the power and ability to thwart our very success each day, to wreak havoc on our sales plans and drain us of our motivation. This person can stop us cold and make us feel miserable in the process.

Chances are, you know this person intimately. Perhaps you already spend a great amount of time engaged in negative conversation with him or her. You may have succumbed to the energy-robbing and dream-busting power that this individual has over you. It becomes easy if you have developed a defeatist attitude. Just who is this sinister and powerful person?

Sadly, it is you. To be more specific, it is your subconscious mind, that which steers your every move. In Dr. Shad Helmstetter’s [http://www.shadhelmstetter.com] great work “What to Say When You Talk to Yourself,” he revealed that we are typically engaged in regular self-defeating conversation with ourselves. We doubt our capabilities. We learn to fear both success and failure. We develop an attitude that we cannot be winners so why even try. This is a sickness that must change now.

We need to be expectant. We must get up in the morning expecting the best that life has to offer. We must change our attitudes and adjust our comfort zone. We can no longer accept the status quo. Life is too short to live in such a quagmire of mediocrity or defeat.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, we praise You as the God of UNCOMMON ideas – unique ideas birthed in us through the Holy Spirit within us – ideas that no one has ever thought of before and that You know will work. Many of these are ideas intended to give us victory in the marketplace to advance the Kingdom of God. Bless each of us to recognize ideas coming from You and to act on them promptly.
