Who do you have in your life that you are discipling?

My pastor, Matt Gregory, has told me on several occasions, that everyone needs three types of relationships – 1) someone who is mentoring them, 2) a peer mentor, and 3) someone they are mentoring. Let me share a miraculous story of someone I mentored in 2008.

On Thursday January 24, 2008, I met with Pastors Jacob and Charlene Phillips for a pre-scheduled phone call and online meeting to discuss creating a website for White Oak Run Baptist Church.

Because I’m a people person, I asked Jacob and Charlene how their family was doing. I learned they had 3 grown children, none of whom I had met. Charlene told me that JJ, one of her sons, had graduated in May 2007 and recently lost his job. When I asked what JJ did, she told me he is a graphics artist and has been drawing ever since he could hold a pencil. As a destiny coach, I immediately recognized that JJ’s God-given calling and gifting was graphics design.

When I asked Charlene if JJ knew how to use computer graphic programs, she told me “no.” However, recognizing God’s potential in JJ, I still asked to speak to him. It so happened he was at Charlene’s home. After talking to JJ, I invited him to come over the next morning to discuss possibly working for me.

When JJ showed up on time and nicely dressed the next morning (FridayJanuary 25), I introduced him to Jon Monroe, my web technical consultant. Then I shared my heart, including why I am so passionate for Jesus and the vision for my parent company (Empower 2000). We then went for a one mile walk in my neighborhood on the beautiful day. JJ shared his heart with me. God had quickly blessed us with a heart-to-heart connection.

I offered JJ a position as a part-time graphics consultant, he accepted, and then he began working that same day. I began the tedious process of training JJ to use Photoshop. It turned out he was a quick learner and very motivated. Over the course of the next seven months, JJ designed awesome logos, website headers, business cards, custom posters, and much more for me and my web clients. Eventually, JJ learned Flash on his own and made an awesome animation for my coaching business.

JJ fit in great with our web team and my wife Julia loved having him in our home. To my delight I saw JJ blossom into a mighty man of God as a result of our Christ-centered work days with daily morning devotionals. Over time, I began to love JJ as if he were my own son.

My discipling relationship with JJ led my wife and I to develop a covenant friendship with Jacob and Charlene Phillips. That opened a whole new bunch of doors of opportunity.

Eventually, I came to discover that God had blessed me with the most anointed graphics artist I had ever met. My wife, my son, my other web workers, and my closest friend all recognized this incredible talent in JJ. I believe JJ will be a catalyst to reclaim the “ART” mountain for Jesus Christ.

Around July or August 2008, I asked JJ to find some Photoshop video tutorials. To my surprise, he was able to list those immediately because he frequently accessed those at home to learn as much as possible, as fast as possible. Now enjoy JJ’s links:

http://www.photoshopatoms.com/tutorials/

Around September 2008, I released me three part-time web workers, including JJ. God had gotten me to the point where I was finally ready to outsource my work on an as-needed basis instead. Within a month or so, JJ interview at a large company which was so impressed with his talent they created a brand new position as “computer graphics artist” and hired JJ.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for connecting me with JJ Phillips and then giving me the opportunity to disciple him. Thank You for the strong bond you built between the two of us. Thank You for all the good artistic seeds that JJ sowed into my web business. May 2009 be the most prosperous year of his young life. Thank You Jesus. Amen and hallelujah!

Blessings to learn to use Photoshop well to help your business or organization flourish in the marketplace!

It’s Continuous Personal Development … strategizing, setting challenging goals, and truning those goals into action

We all need relationship, perspective, encouragement, and accountability to reach our maximum potential. A coach can help you sort out what are the most important issues in your life, help you get “unstuck,” and provide a sounding board when you need an outside perspective.

Life is intended to be a “team sport,” and coaching is built on the power of relationship. Coaching is a partnership between two equals, one of whom has some specialized training and life experiences that can challenge the other to move toward their destiny.

We all have blind spots, and all too often our “friends” are reluctant to point them out to us. These blind spots could be the very things that are keeping us stuck where we are.

Finally, we all need support, encouragement, and accountability when we are making a significant change in our life or in the way we do things. A big part of what coaching provides is accountability—that extra nudge to follow through on what you know you need to do.

These are just a few of the things a good coach brings to the relationship.

Finding out how your past and present are keys to your future

Lifeforming Leadership Coaching May 2008 Newsletter
ASSEMBLING THE WHOLE STORY

THE GREAT OMISSION

Matthew 28: 18-20

The following thoughts would better be served in a blog because they require the need for a “paradigm funeral” of old school thinking and a renewed mind of defining success the Jesus way. Here is a list of those thoughts to get some conversations going in your part of the world:

1. Jesus defines “success” as the bottom line of whether or not we are making disciples.

2. Discipleship is almost entirely relational in a combination of small group and one on one culture, outside of church meetings, and especially through the influence of healthy conversations from healthy families around the table.

3. Discipleship assumes we are “going into all of our world” (most of what we do outside of church meetings) to make #1 and #2 above happen. That makes “sending capacity” a better benchmark of success than “seating capacity”.

4. The end game of discipleship is for nations to be discipled (Rev. 21:24-27) so the “burning bush vision” for the church is to equip members to make disciples in the places that shape a nations; at work in the major spheres of vocations that shape the culture.

5. We have made discipleship more of a “teaching commission” at the expense of a “training omission” (v.20). Action steps that integrate and align our daily behaviors with kingdom values and Jesus commands is more hitting the mark than “fill-in-the-blank” lectures or sermon series. (Note: It only takes 45 minutes to read the teaching content of Jesus words given us in scripture.)

Recently Bill Hybels of Willow Creek authentically announced that his “seeker-friendly”congregation did not produce transformational change in the lives of its members; meaning they were not discipled. George Barna’s extensive research in the discipleship deficit in the American church brought him to the unfortunate position of an anti “organized church” position. I believe that Lifeforming can offer a way forward in this debate.

I am giving my life to the core value that Transformational Coaching is a key to making more and better disciples in our nations. Here is why:

1. It consistently targets the core factor of making a disciple; hearing God’s voice. Every religion makes disciples but a disciple of Jesus is led by Him personally (not just His principles) and has the “unfair advantage” of knowing that voice (John 10:3) in the unique design that we are created to respond to that voice (Psalm 139: 13-16).

2. It consistently maximizes the core delivery to make a disciple; a non-judgmental relationship with someone who seeks to 100% believe in you as the Father does, 100% work with you in what the Spirit is prioritizing, and 100% enable you to take ownership for your own development and progress.

3. It consistently models the authentic spiritual authority of stewarding transformation to another by first having been transformed ourselves in the same manner (2 Timothy 2:2). UNTIL SPIRITUAL FATHERS AND MOTHERS ARE DISCIPLED THEMSELVES TRANSFORMATIONALY THEY ARE DEPENDENT ON PROGRAMS AND METHODS THAT ARE INFORMATION TRANSACTIONS MORE THAN LIFE TRANSFER.

4. It consistently produces the kind of community that is compelling and engaging of the spiritual hunger in our cultures that are seeking life-giving spiritual relationships when they turn to Christ. Lifeforming’s Transformational coaches know how to catalyze authentic relationships in organizations that shift those cultures to environments that accelerate personal development in the context of the organization’s mission.

Lifeforming Leadership Coaching has a key role to play in restoring the Great Commission in Matthew 28. We are about the Father’s business of making disciples the Jesus way. This is not an option; it is a mandate.

In what ways are you trusting God to meet your needs?

This morning after spending a few hours of private devotional time, I had an awesome 70 minute devotional time with my son and two other web co-workers to start off our work day seeking God’s Kingdom and His righteousness first. We discussed “finding a peer mentor,” which was the subject of the devotional I wrote last night. All three young men agreed it was important to partake in a mutually beneficial, authentic, peer partner relationship and we began the coaching process to pursue that further.

I shared with my web team members how important my relationships were with my 3 coaching group members for 5 years until Jan 2007 and how God then connected me with Dr. Jerry Graham in June 2007 to continue my intentional and accelerated growth process.

I told them that Jerry and Sharon Graham’s two primary websites (http://www.thecoachingpair.com/ and http://www.nutrition777.com/) are actually Addon domains under JIREHMarketing.com, their parent company. When I asked the young men what “JIREH” meant, they did not know. So I told them that “JIREH” means “provider.”

I then was prompted to do a Google search using “Jehovah Jireh.” The number one entry was a 2-minute YouTube video that ministered deeply to my spirit. In that video, the words “The Lord will provide” appear, which reminded me immediately about Stephen Burke and his ministry by that same name. See today’s Link of the Day to be inspired by this short YouTube video.

When Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering,” little did he know that 2,000 years later Jesus, the Lamb of God, would be crucified in the same place as an atonement for our sins.

Prayer Power

Who do know who might be suitable for a mutually beneficial, authentic, peer partner relationship?

Last Friday (Feb 29) I met with Dr. Jerry Graham as my coach trainer for the Implementation course I am currently taking through Lifeforming Leadership Coaching (LLC). One of the homework assignments to complete beforehand was to write down a formal Growth Plan for myself and at least one of my coaching clients based on growth goals.

While writing the growth plan for my first client, I realized that person would benefit from having a peer mentor. While preparing the growth plan for a second client, I wrote down this growth goal, “Launch a lasting, growth-centered peer mentoring relationship in the next 8 weeks.”

After preparing these 3 growth plans, I moved on to my next homework exercise. To my surprise, one of the handouts discussed how coaching relationships often evolve into helping a client find a peer partner to grow intentionally. Here is an excerpt from LLC’s F18 form titled “Finding a Peer Mentor:”

Developing a constellation of peer mentors, peer coaches (the two are different) and upward coaches is crucial to finishing well. Following is a step-by-step process for finding and approaching prospective peer partners.

Step 1: Identify needs
Talk with your coach about what you need from a peer partner. Here are some questions to help you get started.
1) What do I want to work on, and where could I use some help? (e.g. child rearing, prayer life, work, daily accountability, a leadership challenge, etc.)
2) Do I need an upward coach or simply a peer to walk with me in that area?
3) Who do I know that I respect and could draw from in that particular area?

Step 2: Pray specifically
Finding a peer partner can mean building a new relationship or simply moving an existing relationship to a new level.

Step 3: Relationship building
Step 4: Discuss peer mentoring
Step 5: Get started
Step 6: Find a mentor

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, I praise You as the God of authentic relationships. Thank You for the the accountability partners you have blessed me with during the past 6 years.
What does it mean that Minnesota is God’s threshing floor for the nation?

As yesterday’s devotional discussed, one way to serve like Jesus is to be grateful. Sharing photos with you is one way for me to show gratitude to God for special people and special places he has allowed me to encounter.

By far, my most popular devotionals are ones with photos. Even people who have never met me, love looking at the photos. A single photo can easily stir up lots of memories and ideas, even for those who don’t know anyone in the photo and have never been to that place.

The most popular things on websites are typically photos, videos, and stories of changed lives. Why? God designed us to be relational.

As each year winds down, I like to think about the #1 contact (mentor) that God connected me with. In 2005, it was Rick Heeren. Over the past two years, Rick and Rachel and their two children, Derek and Arleigh, have become dear friends.

Consequently, it was a tremendous privilege for me to be able to go with my wife and daughter to Minneapolis October 19-21 for Arleigh’s wedding. I had the privilege to meet numerous extraordinary people. I observed several neat things that will be beneficial when my children get married. I was particularly impressed by the favorable spiritual climate in Minnesota.

During their 50 state tour in 2003-2004, Dutch Sheets and Chuck Pierce prophesied that Minnesota is “God’s threshing floor” for the nation.” Rick addresses this prophecy in his book “The Threshing Floor.” This trip to Minnesota was my second and my wife and daughter’s first. Our family has now been officially threshed.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege to go to Minneapolis for Arleigh’s wedding. Bless Arleigh and Jeff Hagberg’s new life together. Thank You for each person my family met. Thank You for what You are doing in Minnesota. May You water the good seeds that were sown last weekend with Your miracle grow. Thank You Jesus. Amen.

“Coaching you to care for the only body you will ever have” – slogan for Nutrition777.com

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. (Hosea 4:6)

On a scale of 1-10, how would I rate my nutritional health?
My physical health?
The stress in my life?
How much is good health worth to me?
What person is capable to coach me to optimal health?
Who do I know who needs a godly nutrition coach?

From my physician’s perspective, I suspect that Sharon Graham is one of the best nutritional coaches in the world. Why? God has gifted her with the unique combination of the background of a registered nurse, the understanding of how to do proper research, and the heart, training, and expertise of a loving Christian life coach. Sharon understands the importance of stress in disease and recognizes many of the same ills of modern-day medicine that I do.

How did we get connected? The answer to that question is important to determine whether my connection to Sharon was a good connection or God-ordained one. In December 2006, Joseph Umidi, cofounder of Transformation Leadership Coaching, drove all the way from Virginia Beach to Culpeper for a small Healthy Virginia meeting. After meeting me, he referred Sharon to me. Sharon sent an email to me, but I never received it.

Half a year later, on June 1, 2007, I met Jerry Graham at my first Accelerated Coach Training (ACT) workshop at Virginia Beach. Jerry came to that to observe Scott Wozniac in his coach training role because he had helped train Scott. When our group went to lunch, Jerry and I happened to sit next to one another. When Jerry learned what I do, he quickly connected me with Sharon. Within a month, they both had become web clients of mine.

Just as Jerry is known as the “pastor’s coach,” Sharon is known as the “nutritional coach.” If you make the time to do so, you’ll be quite impressed by reading what some of Sharon’s former clients have to say at today’s Link of the Day.

Recognizing her nutritional expertise, the Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) recently filmed Sharon for a health segment broadcast on world-wide TV. You can watch that short video on the homepage at www.nutrition777.com. It’s easy to receive free nutritional counsel from Sharon by signing up for Sharon and Jerry Graham’s “Daily Gram” at one of their websites.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for Sharon Graham and her many gifts to help people take care of their bodies. Thank You for the healthy nutritional products she markets. Open the right doors to greatly magnify her impact. Give her the platform to change the lives of millions of people around the world. Thank You Jesus. Amen.

Just as a lighthouse serves as a guide to aid navigation through water, a coach serves as a guide to aid navigation through life by helping a person move from one place to another. – Jerry and Sharon Graham

Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43:19)

If you could only do one thing to bless your pastor and church, what would that be?
If you could only do one thing to leap forward into living a healthy lifestyle, what would that be?

Two of the nicest, neatest, and influential people I have met in 2007 are Jerry and Sharon Graham, collectively known as The Coaching Pair. Their slogan and life purpose is “guiding you to your destiny.” I highly, highly recommend you learn more about them by visiting their website at today’s Link of the Day. Even if you don’t think you would benefit from their services, I’m confident you know someone who would.

I met Dr. Jerry Graham on June 1 at my very first Accelerated Coach Training (ACT) workshop in Norfolk Virginia. He wasn’t even taking the course, but he had come to observe Scott Wozniac, our coach trainer. Jerry had actually trained Scott to be both a life coach and a coach trainer. When the group of us went to lunch that day, I got to know Jerry better. Within a month, God blessed me to pick up The Coaching Pair as a web client. Wow!!!

Jerry and Sharon Graham are both certified Christian life coaches. As close friends of Joseph and Marie Umidi, they were involved in the birthing of Transformational Leadership Coaching, Inc (TLCI). Together, they completed the very first series of coaching courses offered by TLCI to become certified life coaches seven years ago.

So far, Jerry has provided more than 3,000 hours of paid professional life coaching, while training more than 200 Christian life coaches. Because of Sharon’s background as a registered nurse and interest in nutrition, Sharon and Jerry also have 1,700 contacts in their nutrition network. Think of all the lives this couple is changing. They are absolutely amazing.

As “The Pastor’s Coach,” Jerry’s coaching specialty is helping God’s shepherds be all that He has destined them to be. He coaches pastors to reach goals they’ve set for themselves as well as for their churches.

As “The Nutritional Coach,” Sharon knows how to educate, support, and empower people as they learn the truth about living a healthy lifestyle and making changes that you’re ready and able to make.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for connecting me to Jerry and Sharon Graham and for our budding friendship. Thank You for the many lives they have touched through their astounding ministry. Bless them! Exponentially multiply their ministry through the web. May people who read this message seize this opportunity You have placed before them. Thank You Jesus! We love and adore You. Amen and Hallelujah! Praise the LORD!

How can you know the heart of the Father?

In response to my July 27 devotional titled “4,000,000 Bibles for Africa,” Patti May sent an email at 6:20 AM the next morning saying, “You need to come and meet Michael Howard who just opened a bible school in Africa.” My devotionals on July 30 and 31 shared about Michael and his ministry.

On July 30, Patti May emailed me again inviting me and my friends to come to the Church at Northern Virginia (CNVA) [www.cnva.org] in Oakton to hear her friend Rev. Michael Howard speak about “Intercession” on the weekend of Aug 10-12.

A few days later when I spoke to Patti, she told me Michael is the most sold-out man of God she has ever known. Yesterday evening, I had the special privilege to hear Michael and meet him. WOW!!! Now I agree with Patti’s statement. What Michael shares will revolutionize your prayer life. Be sure to visit today’s Link of the Day to see photos from yesterday’s conference and to learn more.

If you are able, I highly recommend you come to the Church at Northern Virginia tonight (Aug 11) at 7 PM to hear Michael speak again about “Intercession and Prayer.” He will be speaking a third time at 11 AM tomorrow (Aug 12).

Rev. Michael Howard is the Founder and President of Shekinah Ministries and Kalibu Ministries in Africa. He is the author of 14 books, including two books on Intercession, “TALES OF AN AFRICAN INTERCESSOR” and “PROVEN ARROWS OF INTERCESSION.”

Michael’s conference will lay out proven principles of intercession. Intercession is a discipline in relationship and has everything to do with knowing the heart of the Father. This will be a new look at intercession which will inspire and change your life as well as encourage you to begin to intercede. It will include inspiring accounts of how intercession changed lives, nations and world events. This teaching will revolutionize your prayer time. No longer empty words from a weary heart, but powerful, life-giving words, from a heart filled with the knowledge and intimacy of our Lord.

The “Intercession and Prayer” conference is open to the entire Body of Christ in the Metro DC area. There is no charge or registration fee. A love offering will be taken at each service for Shekiniah Ministries. Please make plans to join us and forward this note to your praying friends and those who need to become prayer warriors for Jesus.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for the awesome privilege to hear and meet Michael Howard. Thank You for his teaching which will revolutionize my prayer life. May many people who live in or near the Metro DC area will make the sacrifice to rearrange their schedules to hear Michael speak again tonight or tomorrow morning. To You Jesus, be all glory, honor, and praise, now and forever. Hallelujah and Amen!

A good example is worth a thousand sermons! – Abraham Lincoln

Do you have a mentor and a mentoree (someone you are mentoring)?

Teacher and mentor, Dr. Howard Hendricks talked about the necessity for good mentors this way: “The greatest crisis today is the crisis in leadership. And the greatest crisis in leadership is the crisis of character. Character is the result of four things:

1) The choices you make;
2) The values you embrace;
3) The crises you experience;
4) The mentor you choose.

What can influence positively and deeply a commitment to godly character in us and to encourage others to whom we minister? There are two things. First, we must get the Word of God into hearts, and secondly, we have to see it modeled, lived out in lives. Nothing teaches Christ’s character faster than seeing it lived out. When the Bible we are learning is fleshed out by parents and other mentors in daily life, it marks us — unforgettable.

John summarizes two life qualities of Jesus that remained glued to his heart all those decades. Jesus was “full of grace and truth.” What a difficult combination! Jesus was wonderful to be with. He was always sensitive, loving, attentive, thoughtful, forgiving, focused on you. Full of grace. But Jesus was also full of truth. “Speaking the truth, in love” is supernatural.

Prayer Power
Loving Father, thank You for getting the Word of God into my heart and for allowing me to see godly character modeled by my parents and coaching group partners. Bless the choices my family makes, the values we embrace, the crises we experience, and the mentors we choose. May we be rich in the fruit of the Spirit. Make us completely transparent to allow Your rivers of living water to flow right through us into the lives of many people. Thank You Jesus. Amen.

Mentorship is the shortest distance to any future you are desiring.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” (John 14:26)

My precious partner,,, Your success matters to me.

An uncommon mentor transfer wisdom through relationship. Mentors are the difference between poverty and prosperity; decrease and increase; loss and gain; pain and pleasure; deterioration and restoration.

Mentorship is the willingness to invest in others … to give. Jesus was the Mastor Mentor. He taught thousands at a time. Often, He sat with His twelve disciples and fed information into them. He kept them motivated, influenced, and inspired. He taught them about prayer … about Heaven … about hell. He educated His staff on many topics, including His purpose, giving, and relationships. Jesus taught in various environments – in synagogues, in villages, by the well, in a boat. He taught by precept and by example.

I love giving … I love receiving … I love the Holiday Season. The atmosphere seems to change with Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sowing this time of year seems so natural to many.

In the busyness and excitement of the holidays, remember The Secret Place, your place of prayer, the place in which all life is defined. Analyze what is truly important. Pursue a relationship with the Holy Spirit. Pursue His mentorship.

I feel deeply that a door of significant promotion awaits those who pay attention to the voice of the Holy Spirit. He is the Spirit of wisdom. He is the answer. He is the solution. His mentorship is invaluable. Do not become so encumbered with the cares of life, so burdened with productivity that you fail to recognize the greatest secret in the universe.

Are you meeting daily in The Secret Place to allow the Holy Spirit to mentor you?

Prayer Power
O Holy Spirit, Soul of my soul, I adore Thee. Thank You for calling me by name and for Your unconditional love. Thank You for Your peace that the world can not give. Thank You for being my Mentor. Thank you for coming to me in the silence, for relieving all my fears. You are hope for all those who are hopeless. In the shadows of the night, You are our light. You are our rest. I bless You now and forever. Amen.
