Ex 12:13 ‘Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

What friends do you want to bring to Jesus?

Today many Christians around the world celebrate Holy Thursday in remembrance of Jesus’ “last supper” (Pesach/Passover eve). It’s interesting that this year the Jewish and Christian celebrations of Passover nearly coincide.

Yesterday morning I received an email from Jeff Bernstein sent to his Gates of Zion followers stating:

“Tonight is Pesach/Passover eve. Today on the 14th day of what is the 1st month of the year at twilight each household of Israel killed the Passover lamb and put its blood on the doors of their homes. Passover as far as I know has been celebrated longer than any event in history. Jewish people have observed Passover for over three thousand years! How do we know it is Passover? Look outside this evening. The moon is full. When Israel departed from Egypt they did not have flashlights. God timed it perfectly. A full moon gave light so the entire nation could pack up quickly and leave 400 years of bondage in Egypt. Passover is a powerfully significant feast for both Jews and Gentiles who are grafted onto Israel’s olive tree. It is not that Passover points to the Messiah nor that the Messiah is found within the elements of the Passover Seder Meal. It is more powerful than that. Messiah Yeshua is the Passover!”

On Sunday April 5, Pastor Matt Gregory preached a powerful message titled “Contagious Christian Commissioning.” During that, he laid our four basic objectives that make up the “Job Description of a Contagious Christian.” Those included 1) Deeply understand the substitutionary atonement by Jesus, 2) Always remember what Jesus did, 3) Passionately share about Jesus, and 4) Expectantly live.

At the end of the worship service, Matt commissioned everyone to come forward and nail a card to a large wooden cross with the name of at least one friend they want to bring to Jesus. As part of this commissioning service, Matt challenged each of us to commit to:

1) Pray daily for my friend(s) by name
2) Invest in them as a good friend by caring and serving
3) Invite them to attend the worship service on Easter
4) Fast on Good Friday (April 10)
5) Share my story and God’s message with my friend

Prayer Power
LORD Jesus, thank You for the feast of Passover to celebrate the greatest gift ever given. Thank You that through your death and resurrection, all those who believe and willingly receive your grace have resurrection life in You. Help each of us fully grasp the signficance of this momentous day and Holy Week. Transform us into contagious Christians, not just with the words we share, but with the lives we lead. Amen and Halleluah to You, the Passover lamb.

How do you “fireproof” your marriage?
When will you fireproof your marriage?

God truly works in mysterious ways. Today’s story is an amazing tangle of circumstances with God reaching out to bless marriages right here in Culpeper, but also in Virginia, America, and beyond.

On Tuesday evening November 4 (Election Day), Julia (my wife) and I went to hear Rick Heeren speak at City On A Hill Church in Culpeper, Virginia. Pastor GW Dameron was the gracious host. This was the first time I had ever been to the new location for City On A Hill Church, now located in the same building as AT&T (formerly Cingular), on Route 522 adjacent to Yowell Meadow Park.

What Rick shared was fantastic to fan the flames for community transformation. As Julia and I were getting ready to leave the building, the Holy Spirit prompted Julia to pick up a gorgeous handout on the table at the back of the sanctuary titled “Fireproof Your Marriage: Never Leave Your Partner Behind.” The back of that handout said:

“Learn the secrets to a lasting marriage. Financial pressures, the stress of parenting, differences between men and women, boredom, temptations – they can all scorch a relationship. The fires will come – will your marriage last? Come to City On A Hill Church this week as we start a series called Fireproof Your Marriage. The God who designed marriage intended for it to be a loving, lifelong partnership. Join us as we discuss His plans for indestructible relationships. You’ll find practical insights for building an enduring red-hot marriage.”

The Fireproof Your Marriage handout opened a discussion with GW and us about the 6 week marriage series he is hosting at City On A Hill Church on Saturdays at 6:00 pm EST, starting November 8. Julia and I learned that “FIREPROOF” (the movie) was playing at our local theaters and we talked about watching that movie on Sat Nov 8.

Early yesterday afternoon, my wife asked if I wanted to go with her a few hours later to watch the matinee showing of “The Secret Life of Bees.” Normally I’m not a big movie buff, especially during the work day. But I agreed. When we got to the theater, I asked how much longer “FIREPROOF” would be playing at the theater and found out that was the last day.

So Julia and I watched 2 movies back-to-back – “The Secret Life of Bees” and “FIREPROOF.” For someone who only goes to a movie once every 2-3 months, and never to back-to-back movies, this was peculiar. Both movies were fantastic – extremely wholesome stories. Fireproof starred Kirk Cameron and was made by the creators of “Facing The Giants,” one of my favorite movies of all time.

As a result of the Nov 4 discussion with GW and the FIREPROOF movie yesterday, Julia and I now plan to participate in the “Fireproof Your Marriage” series that starts Saturday November 8 at City On A Hill Church in Culpeper. If you live nearby and are available, we invite you to join us.

Who is FIREPROOF for? According to a blog post titled “Singles loving FIREPROOF,” “it’s for everybody. Kids, parents, older couples, singles. Everybody. Each viewer learns about forgiveness. The movie speaks to all relationships and has application for us all as we accept and serve each other unconditionally.”

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for these two fantastic movies. Thank You for leading Julia and me to watch them together yesterday. Thank You for the “Fireproof Your Marriage” series that starts in Culpeper on Saturday November 8. May everyone who participates be richly blessed. Bless all those who were involved in the making of these two movies. Thank You Jesus. Amen and hallelujah!

So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 8:15)

Who do you play together with frequently?
How many close authentic relationships do you have?

Today is a big day at Soul Purpose Church (SPC) – it’s “Friend Day.” For several months, Pastor Matt Gregory has planned the messages leading up to today along with the seven week S.H.A.P.E. series that begins in two weeks. Matt’s goal is to have 150 people meeting in LIFE groups to experience friendship in community and to discover their unique purposes.

For more than a month, Matt has been encouraging each person at SPC to invite at least one friend to come on Oct 5. This morning at our 10:30 am worship at Liberty High School in Bealeton, we will have lots of first time guests. If you live locally and don’t go to church regularly, I invite you to come today as my guest. Come find me and tell me you came as my guest so we can sit together. I’m going to treat people who come as my guests to a free lunch afterwards at a nearby restaurant.

For directions to Soul Purpose Church, click here.

Yesterday from 10 am – Noon, SPC sponsored a gas buy down at the Bealeton 7-11 on the corner of Routes 28 and 17. Cars lined up from both directions to save 25 cents on every gallon of gas. What a great way to reach out to a community and bless the people. It certainly is a good way to create a first impression.

In my September 23 devotional I wrote about 5 action steps to be fully engaged with my friends. One of those was “play together.” Well, two weekends ago, most of the ladies at our church went on a 3 day, ladies spiritual retreat at Lake Gaston in southern Virginia. They had a wonderful time to bond, worship God, pray, and reflect. They shared photos from their retreat at last Sunday’s worship service.

Then last weekend, two of those ladies who led the singing at the retreat led the singing at the Sunday worship service. That was the most fun worship service at SPC I have ever been to. Afterwards a group of about 30 of us drove to White Oak Canyon to hike up to the first large waterfall where Tabatha was baptized. It was awesome to experience a baptism near a waterfall. We all had such a great time. You can find photos of that hike and baptism at today’s Link of the Day.

Jesus said that he came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. It’s a delight to be part of a local church where the preaching and atmosphere help people experience the abundance.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for all the great things you are doing at Soul Purpose Church. Thank You that Pastor Matt is a purpose-driven leader. Thank You for all the new people who will come this morning. May You bless the entire worship service this morning including Matt’s message. May You bless the times of fellowship and sharing afterwards when many guests are treated to free lunches at restaurants all over. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

What do you need to let go of to let God?

For the past 7 years, my theme verse for each day has been Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” About 3-4 weeks ago while I was journaling, the Holy Spirit told me that “Seek Ye First” applies not only to me as an individual, but my company as well. Since then, our web team has been spending an average of 60-90 minutes in devotional time each morning. As a result, our team and each of its team members is seeing a lot of fruit.

“Each morning, a different team member leads the devotional time. Yesterday morning was Amy’s turn. She is my administrative assistant. Amy shared a fantastic message using the book by Eric and Leslie Ludy called “When God Writes Your Life Story.” Amy read page 45 of that book to our team and then shared how to apply that to our lives. Here is what that page says:

“God created us to experience vibrant daily intimacy with Him and to constantly pursue even greater depths of relationship with Him. But too often, once we scratch the surface of knowing Him, we pitch our tent. We stop pursuing Him. We stop seeking Him. And instead of having a daily, passionate relationship with our God, we settle for an imitation. We become trapped in the shallowness of the Christian game. We sing songs about His love and read books about His grace, but we rarely experience Him in our daily lives.

To experience the something more that each of us longs for, we must put away the Christian game, reflect our imitation versions of Christianity, pack up our tents, and embark upon the adventure of truly knowing God. We must shake off the settler’s mentality and become pioneers, passionately pursuing more and more of our King.”

Heavenly Father, we praise You as our GPS, our ultimate mapping system. Thank You for guiding and directing our steps. Thank You that while each of us has free will, it is like a tiny dot in the middle of a huge circle representing Your master plan. Thank You that it’s Your plans that prevail such that our individual stories fit into the context of Your much bigger story in which there is eternal victory. We bless You Jesus and Your holy name. Amen and hallelujah!

But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; (1 Corinthians 1:27)

How am I doing in the major areas of my LIFE, MARRIAGE, FAMILY, WORK and CHURCH?

On December 28, 2007 I received this seemingly crazy instruction from the Holy Spirit, “Start 2008 by listening to all of The Bible Experience (entire Bible) in one month.” I say “crazy” because I already had my own plans on how to start 2008 off well and my plans didn’t leave room to read and listen to the Bible for 3 or more hours daily.

On the first day of this new year, I attempted to listen to all 50 chapters of the book of Genesis using The Bible Experience CD set while reading along in my Maxwell Leadership Bible. In the evening, while half-way through this gargantuan task, my wife came running into my office thrilled to tell and show me something. While cleaning our basement, she found a blank leather-bound journal from Wisdom Hunters and now wants to start journaling.

That was such an unexpected blessing. But the blessing didn’t stop there. Inside the Wisdom Hunters journal, I found a Wisdom Hunters business card from Richard Shupert. I remembered meeting Richard just one time in August 2006 at the Founder’s Inn in Virginia Beach during the International Coalition of Workplace Ministries conference. The business card prompted me to check out the Wisdom Hunters website. There I found a link to a blog with some of the best questions I have ever seen for an “annual life audit.” See today’s Link of the Day for those questions.

Here is how John & Debbie Woodall begin their outstanding article titled “Reflection and Preparation:”

The habit or practice of reflection has increased and become very important to me over time. I have noticed people are running so fast and not taking the time to sit, think, review, remember and readjust their lifestyles and schedules. With some regular times of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reflection, it can lead to peace, stability and very purposeful living.

The following questions are to get us thinking about this past year and prepare us for “The Best Year Ever.” How am I doing in the major areas of my LIFE, MARRIAGE, FAMILY, WORK and CHURCH?

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, I praise You as the God who works in very mysterious ways. I acknowledge that as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are Your ways higher than my ways, and Your thoughts than my thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). I gladly submit to Your authority and ask You to use me as one of Your vessels to put to shame the wisdom of this world. In Jesus name, I pray and give You glory, now and forever. Amen and hallelujah!

A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time. (Isaiah 60:22)

What were 10 of the top spiritual stories in your community in 2007?

The main headline on the front page of yesterday’s local newspaper read “The top 10 of 2007.” The paper went on to list these top 10 stories of 2007 as ranked by the editors and reporters of the Culpeper Star Exponent: 1) The race for sheriff, 2) illegal immigration, 3) trench collapse, 4) housing slump, 5) new businesses, 6) Josh Thomas, 7) Co. 11 suspension, 8) Dominion Power plan, 9) consolidation, and 10) drought. According to a vote by Associated Press members, the top news story in America in 2007 was the Virginia Tech killings.

But what happened spiritually in 2007? Are the people in my community better or worse off? From my perspective, the spiritual climate in Culpeper improved substantially. In chronological order, here are 10 of my favorite spiritual stories for 2007:

1) Wired for Success
2) Prayer Walk of Binns Middle School on March 25
3) Culpeper hosts three National Day of Prayer rallies on May 1-2, 2007
4) The Extraordinary Miracle of 800 Battle Cry Tickets
5) Global Day of Prayer assembly on Pentecost Sunday, May 27, 2007
6) Weekly “Marching Through Culpeper” prayer conference calls were started by Virginia Morton in July 2007. We believe God is going to turn Virginia’s book into a TV mini-series and then a major motion picture to heal the heart of America.
7) Candlelight Prayer Vigil for Butch Mills on 9-11 (Sep 11, 2007)
8) Celebration of 150th Anniversary of Fulton Street Revival on Sep 24, 2007
9) Culpeper community Thanksgiving service on Tuesday Nov 20 (Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie and Butch Mills)
10) Culpeper models successful prison re-entry program (Rev. Mark Jarvis)

Of course, these 10 stories represent only a very small fraction of the many great things that God did in Culpeper in 2007. Thank you to all of you (locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally) who are sowing your prayers, time, treasure, and talent to make Culpeper and Virginia a bright light for the world.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for the many ways You blessed Culpeper in 2007. We continue to cry out to You, “Lord, have mercy.” We ask You to give us Your best, not what we deserve. Bring in Your spiritual tsunami. Bless us with godly leaders in the pulpit and in the marketplace. Thank You Jesus. Amen.

What happened spiritually in 2007? Are the people in my community better or worse off? From my perspective, the spiritual climate in Culpeper improved substantially. In chronological order, here are 10 of my favorite spiritual stories for 2007:

1) “Wired for Success”
On Jan 18, 2007, Gov. Tim Kaine flew into Culpeper with Manuel Mandina, the Founder of Terremark Worldwide, to announce that Terremark was going to build a $270 million high tech data center in Culpeper. Mr. Mandina compared this data center to an airport hub and said it would be an online marketplace for business, education, and government. Our Pray Culpeper team felt this was a huge answer to prayer after praying weekly for 18 months for God to bless our marketplace leaders in business, education, and government.

2) Prayer Walk of Binns Middle School on March 25

3) Culpeper hosts three National Day of Prayer rallies on May 1-2, 2007
At the main event held at the Culpeper courthouse at Noon on May 2, three of our local marketplace leaders shared the importance of their faith and prayer in their work. And rewarded all three. Dr. David Cox, superintendant of Culpeper County Public Schools, received a 4-year contract extension along with a healthy salary increase. Steve Nixon, Vice Chairman of the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors, won his re-election campaign with the 2nd largest margin of all the elections. Jim Branch won the hotly contested sheriff’s race.

4) The Extraordinary Miracle of 800 Battle Cry Tickets
On May 11-12, 2007, the same weekend America’s 400th Anniversary celebration was taking place in Jamestown Virginia, Battle Cry 2007 took place at the Nissan Pavilion in northern Virginia. About 15,000-20,000 youth and youth leaders showed up for this amazing event sponsored by Teen Mania Ministries [www.teenmania.com]. Ron Luce, the Founder and President of Teen Mania, challenged the youth of our nation to “Rise Up” and let their voices be heard to reclaim America for God.

As I reflect back on what happened this past weekend at Battle Cry 2007, I’m in awe of how God has blessed the united prayers of our Pray Culpeper team. Not only did God multiply the number of Battle Cry tickets that Dewey McDonnell purchased from 40 (2006) to 400 to 800 (2007), but He then united the hearts of many of our local youth leaders to bring their youth to Battle Cry 2007, and He moved this event from Baltimore to Virginia, making it easier and cheaper for our local youth to attend.

God also gave Dewey the opportunity to display our nine-foot wide Pray Culpeper banner at the Nissan Pavilion and to get on stage with Ron Luce to share the 40-400-800 miracle in front of thousands of people live and to millions more through TV and the Internet.

5) Global Day of Prayer assembly on Pentecost Sunday, May 27, 2007
For the first time, this public Christian event was held both in English and Spanish

6) Weekly “Marching Through Culpeper” prayer conference calls were started by Virginia Morton in July 2007. We believe God is going to turn Virginia’s book into a TV mini-series and then a major motion picture to heal the heart of America.

9) “Preaching With Passion” – Culpeper community Thanksgiving service on Tuesday Nov 20, 2007

With Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie as our keynote speaker, we had record attendance. The return and testimony of Butch Mills delighted the crowd.

10) Culpeper models successful prison re-entry program (Rev. Mark Jarvis)

Of course, these 10 stories represent a very small fraction of the big things that God did in Culpeper in 2007. To all of you who have been sowing your lives and prayers to make Culpeper a bright light for the world, I say, “Thank you!”

The opposite of faith is not unbelief; it is memory! – Ed Silvoso

Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:19-21)

How would you describe your faith?
Is it pleasing to God?

As a whole, the body of Christ in America is not just asleep; it’s in a coma. There is a lack of urgency, expectancy, and awareness. To combat this, God is sending modern day prophets to speak life and hope back into the lives of people.

When Bob Griffin spoke in Culpeper on January 15, scales fell of my eyes when he explained that the spirit Jesus referred to that could only come out with prayer and fasting was the spirit of unbelief in his disciples, not the evil spirit causing the boy to have convulsions.

During the time of Jesus’ ministry, the Pharisees were extremely religious people. They knew the Law and worked hard to keep it. They had a form of godliness, but denied the power of God. That same dangerous religious spirit is now pervasive in our culture in America. Yet God says that without faith it is impossible to please Him. Simply being good does not cut the mustard.

To get juice out of a grape, you have to crush the flesh of the grape. To get oil out of an olive, you have to crush the flesh of the olive. To have the full power of the Holy Spirit manifest in the lives of born-again believers, they must crush their flesh. When they do, the extraordinary will become ordinary.

Prayer Power
Father, I praise You as the God of faith. Crush my flesh and that of my family members so that we may manifest the full power of the Holy Spirit within us. May the blood of Jesus cover us and all our memories of the past so that we may be released into the wonderful future You have prepared for us. Bless us to live holy lives in You, with You, and through You. Thank You Jesus. Amen.

2007 is the 400th anniversary of the birth of English-speaking America!

“Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, And make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.” (Isaiah 56:7)

What are you doing on January 1, 2007 to re-dedicate America back to God?

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

You are invited to join our Pray Culpeper team at Noon on Monday January 1, 2007 for a dedication ceremony of Culpeper’s new downtown prayer and ministry center. This is located at 203 S. Main Street, in the basement of the building adjacent to the Culpeper Post Office.

Located in the heart of our city, this new prayer center is in a prime location by the Culpeper post office. More traffic may pass by our local post office than any other place in Culpeper besides Walmart.

God works in mysterious ways. Several people at the Dec. 18 Pray Culpeper meeting expressed an interest in meeting on January 1st to pray in the new year (400th) right.

Since the Culpeper Library is closed on January 1, God opened the door for Dewey McDonnell and I to officially dedicate more than half of our new downtown office as a prayer and ministry center. Soon we will start using one of our office rooms for “Pass the Salt” lunches for business people and another room for a 24/7 prayer center (“boiler room”).

Please help spread the word!!!

Prayer Power
LORD, it’s my heart’s desire to see Culpeper become a city of prayer. Only You can make that happen. Only You can bring about the unity that is necessary. Bless our city! Bless our prayers! Bless the dedication of Your 24/7 prayer room at noon on January 1. Bless all those who come. Bless all the major entrances of Culpeper with Pray Culpeper billboards! To God be all glory, honor, and praise! Thank You Jesus! Amen! Praise the LORD!
