How many servings of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and the like do you eat in an average day?

Therefore I urge you to take nourishment, for this is for your survival, since not a hair will fall from the head of any of you. (Acts 27:34; NKJ)

Friday, we were excited to announce our coming e-book and seven-part webinar series on one of our most impassioned topics — wellness! To review, Dr. Randy Peck, MD (we felt it good to have a doctor along for a wellness series), Sharon (who is a RN), and I have teamed up and will be conducting an interview-style weekly webinar to lead you through the six major factors that determine a person’s wellness. This first webinar will be an overview of the entire series and is open to all who can attend for no charge whatsoever. You simply need to be at your computer so you can participate in the roll out. The big day and time is today, April 1, at high noon EDT. Put it on your calendar and reserve the hour. To register for our free webinar, CLICK HERE.

The third major factor to wellness is to eat more superfoods. Superfoods? Food with a red cape and a big “S” emblazoned on it somewhere? No, no, no…superfood is simply nutrition-rich food. I bet you could name most of them with out even looking. And no, donuts are not on the list — but dark chocolate is, hallelujah!

My resident expert, Sharon, wrote a short article about superfoods titled “Five Simple Things” [http://thecoachingpair.com/blog/five-simple-things/] in May 2008. She even included a link to a list of superfoods. Sharon likes to call them “God-foods.” Whole books have been written on this topic. But again, for most of us, we need to keep it simple.

The simple bottom line is eat more superfoods this week than you did last. How many superfoods should you eat? How many more than last week? All up to you. If you only eat one a day on average (and believe it or not, there are some who don’t even eat one a week), then adding one or two superfoods a day is going to begin to make a big difference. The issue is simply “more,” not how many more.

Simple enough, right? So see…as I predicted, a little more complex than water and exercise, but with the help of a list, it’s just as easy. Be sure and join us today at noon to hear the rest of the factors to wellness. See you at high noon EDT.

Prayer Power
Father, the name God-foods says it all. If they’re God-foods, they must be good for us. We thank You for the God-foods that are so readily available to us. And we thank You for those who will be joining us later today for the wellness webinar.

Blessing of the Day

Blessings on you as you purpose to add one superfood to your diet this very day — of course, after you register for today’s webinar!

How much water do you drink on an average day?

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:21; NKJ)

The big day and time is next Wednesday, April 1, at high noon EDT. Put it on your calendar and reserve the hour. To register for the webinar, CLICK HERE.

The first major factor to wellness is to drink more water than you already do. How’s that for simple? Notice that I didn’t say how many glasses or ounces of water you need to drink every day, although there are some guidelines that the experts suggest. But we’re into simple here. And to keep it simple, just drink more. Drink more this week than you did last week. I didn’t even say how much more. You decide. It’s really up to you how fast you want to reach your desired wellness goal.

So, if you’re only drinking one glass of water a day on average, make it two this week-or even one and a half. I’ll guarantee you that’s a step in the right direction. Just keep doing those little steps on a consistent basis, and before you know it, they will have added up to a giant step or two.

Why water? Well, if you really want to know, go read Sharon’s 11/1/07 DG entitled, “Elixir of Life!” and then read the link. And for further reinforcement, read her 11/8 DG “More Elixir Please” and associated link. It’s all good information, but to simplify all that great advice, just drink a little more water than you did last week and you’ll be on your way to great health.

The second major factor? Tune in tomorrow. See you then. In the meantime, have a drink on me (of water that is). And don’t forget to register for the Wellness Webinar at the link below.

Prayer Power
Father, we’re truly excited about the webinar that is now just two days away. We pray that those who will register to come are the very ones who will be most excited about wellness and are actively seeking answers.

Blessing of the Day
Registration link for Wellness Webinar at Noon EST on April 1, 2009

Blessings as you reach for another glass of water today while you register for our Webinar!

Journaling
For those who are really stressed and need to feel that they’re doing something, journaling about stressful emotions can help get them out of your head so you don’t end up ruminating on what stresses you. Be sure to end your journaling session with some brainstorming on solutions, and you’ll get a better sense of control over the situation, and a more positive attitude.

What do women especially need to be aware of regarding stress?

We continue with our weekly series about reducing stress. Today’s message is an excerpt from another excellent article by Elizabeth Scott. The entire article can be found at today’s Link of the Day.

It seems to be common knowledge that women are generally busier and more stressed than men, that they juggle more roles and are constantly rushing. But how true is this perception?

Research from The University of Arizona’s School of Family and Consumer Resources decided to find out. They took a sample of 166 married couples and had each participant maintain a daily diary over the course of 42 days, where they recorded their daily stressors. The results indeed showed that women reported a greater amount of “high distress” days and fewer distress-free days than men.

Interestingly, the differences in levels of stressful days were due to women experiencing more onsets of “distress episodes” (having stress response triggered), rather than being more likely to continue in a distressed state from one day to the next. In other words, women didn’t hold onto their stress more; they just experienced more episodes of being stressed.

This brings up some important issues regarding women and stress that women need to be aware of:

1) Understand Gender Differences in Stress?
2) Eliminate What You Can
3) Alter Your Perspective?
4) Have Some Quick Stress Relievers?
5) Maintain Regular Stress-Relieving Habits?

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank you for Elizabeth Scott and the excellent articles she has written about reducing stress. May today’s message enlighten many women to reduce stress in their lives. Thank You Jesus. Amen.
Stress in Women
How Women’s Stress Differs; How Women Can Relieve Stress
By Elizabeth Scott, M.S., About.com
Updated: June 3, 2008

This brings up some important issues regarding women and stress, that women need to be aware of:

Understand Gender Differences in Stress
If you’re feeling more stressed than your male counterparts, don’t take it as a sign that you’re not handling stress as well; it might be because you’re experiencing more stress. Give yourself a pat on the back for handling what you already are, and move confidently to step two.

Eliminate What You Can
It seems that people are always asking women (especially mothers!) to help with group projects like organizing office birthday parties or running the PTA. While many of these activities are fulfilling, they can add up to a significant amount of stress just by filling your schedule to the brim. While it can be very difficult to say no sometimes (especially if you tend to be a “people pleaser”), it’s vital to your health and happiness that you keep in mind that saying yes to too many requests means saying no to things you need: time alone, hobbies, and other soul-nourishing activities. To maintain a reasonable level of daily stress, women need to get used to the idea of setting priorities and saying no.

Alter Your Perspective
Much of your experience with stress can be eliminated with a change in the way we look at things. This may sound too good to be true, but it isn’t! Altering the way you conceptualize the events you find stressful (viewing them as a “challenge” instead of a “threat,” or an “opportunity” instead of a “crisis,” for example) can actually make them feel less threatening and stressful. When you don’t perceive a situation as a threat, your body’s stress response is deactivated more quickly (or doesn’t get triggered in the first place), and you’re more able to avoid the effects of chronic stress. (See this article on cognitive restructuring for more.)

Have Some Quick Stress Relievers
Because you can’t eliminate all stress in life (and wouldn’t want to if you could!), and because it may not be possible to stop reacting to stress (even with the most positive outlook), it’s important to have some fast stress relievers in order to reverse your stress response quickly and prevent yourself from entering a state of chronic stress.

Maintain Regular Stress-Relieving Habits
You can also prevent yourself from getting into an overwhelmed state (where you’re more reactive to stress) by maintaining some regular stress relief activities as part of your schedule. Studies show that those who meditate regularly are less reactive to stressors that occur in their lives. Exercise is also an important option to remember; it can keep you physically and emotionally healthy. Journaling also has many benefits for its users. Adding one of these options to your morning or nightly routine could bring be especially useful.

Do you need a good laugh today?

God is a funny God. Look, he uses ordinary people like you and me, despite some of the foolish things we do, to accomplish extraordinary things for Him to fulfill His perfect plan. Amazing!

God has a great sense of humor. When you really get to know God well, he’ll reach out through people and some really weird circumstances to make you laugh. With all the turmoil in the world, we all need a good laugh now and then. Laughter is an instant vacation. And laughter breaks down barriers between people, races, churches, etc.

For those of you who know me really well, you know I love to laugh. After I had worked at Giles Memorial Hospital for 3 months in late 2003, one of the nurses commented after I started laughing hard, “Dr. Peck, I thought you were always serious.” I replied, “You just don’t really know me very well.”

Today I thought I’d change things up a bit and share a link to a hilarious YouTube video titled “The Difference Between Women and Men’s Brains.” I came across this while tweeting on Twitter today. In addition to connecting me to many of the shakers and the movers on the web, Twitter is lots fun.

Enjoy today’s funny Link of the Day.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of laughter. Thank You for people who make us laugh. Help each of us to take You seriously, but not ourselves. Without you, each of us is a mess. Love You Jesus. Amen and hallelujah!

On Sunday September 7, Pastor Matt Gregory preached an outstanding message titled “Fully Engaged.” Here are some notes from that:

Key “Engagement” Truths
1) God is already fully engaged with me (Psalm 139 – all)
2) God shows His engagement to me by giving up Jesus for me (John 3:16)
3) I show my engagement with God by becoming like Jesus (Romans 8:29)

Rate yourself (on a scale of 0-10) for each of the following 10 Pillars of a Fully Engaged Walk With God
1) My faith is involved in EVERY aspect of my life
2) Because of my faith, I have meaning and purpose in my life
3) My faith gives me an inner peace
4) I am a person who is spiritually committed
5) I spend time in worship every day
6) I have forgiven people who have hurt me deeply
7) My faith has called me to develop my given gifts and talents
8) I will take unpopular stands to defend my faith
9) I speak words of kindness to those in need of encouragement
10) I talk about my faith with those who are not yet Christians

Now add up your total score (0-100) and write that down.

Key Decision: Take responsibility for your own engagement. Don’t blame anyone else or your circumstances.

Action: What one step can you take this week to become more engaged with God? (James 4:8)

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, one day in Your courts is truly better than a thousand elsewhere. May I seek You with all of my heart for all of my days to be fully engaged with You. Thank You Jesus. Amen and Hallelujah!

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

What athlete in the Beijing Olympics most inspired you?

The Beijing Olympics are now over with the Closing Ceremonies having taken place last night. For my wife and me, this was our favorite Olympics ever. In our opinion, China did a marvelous job hosting the Olympics. I felt NBC did its best job ever with the TV coverage. The NBC staff certainly worked long and hard days. Good sportsmanship abounded from athletes all over the world.

Clearly, Michael Phelps achievements were absolutely amazing. Just making the Olympics team is a tremendous accomplishment. Winning any many medal is a big deal, let alone 8 gold medals in a single Olympics. Many other U.S. athletes performed well. I felt proud and grateful to be an American.

My favorite Olympic athletes were those who manifested humility and publically acknowledged and thanked God for their ability to compete. Two of these athletes particularly stood out for me – Lisa Leslie and Ryan Hall.

Lisa Leslie capped off her illustrious Olympic career with a fourth straight gold medal, scoring 14 points in a 92-65 victory over Australia on Saturday August 23.

Ryan Hall competed in the men’s marathon, finishing tenth in a time of 2 hours and 12 minutes. While several Olympics have been won in this time, the men’s field this time chose to set a torrid pace on the hot and humid day. The winner, a 21 year old from Kenya, was well prepared for the race conditions, having trained in the hot humid weather of Japan for months before.

Ryan is the American record holder in the half marathon, having run 13.1 miles in 59:43. That’s an amazing 4:34 minutes/mile pace. Ryan won the U.S. Olympic Trials for the men’s marathon in Boston on November 3, 2007. He is just 25 years old. But what really caught my attention was Ryan’s story (testimony) that I watched on GodTube about his journey and why he runs. See today’s Link of the Day to be inspired.

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, thank You for the opportunity to enjoy the Beijing Olympic Games through various types of media. Thank You for all the inspiring stories. May the seeds of good will that were planted bear much eternal fruit. May the achievements of the athletes inspire each of us to run our races well for You and to finish strong with our families. Thank You for Your peace that passes all understanding. I love You Jesus. Amen and hallelujah!

What happened to our little kid passion for achieving the impossible?
When did we stop shooting for impossible goals and start aiming for realistic targets instead?

Today begins a series of messages titled “When God Writes Your Life Story” based on the book by that name written by Eric and Leslie Ludy. As mentioned previously, Amy Pittman, my administrative assistant, shared a great message from that book with our web team a few weeks ago. That led me to order and begin reading the book.

The book and this devotional series is about the art of living – Christ-enabled living, impossible living, heroic living.

According to the Ludy’s, “This book is about exchanging the ordinary human life for the extraordinary life of God. It’s not for the faint of heart; it’s not for those satisfied with mediocrity; and it’s certainly not for those content with playing life at the beginner’s level. It’s about breaking through impenetrable blockades, scaling impassable barriers, and achieving impossible dreams. It’s about learning to play life at the expert level and actually winning.

The world mocks the premise of the book. Even many Christians scornfully shake their heads at this kind of message denouncing it under the label of “youthful zeal.”
The adventure begins with simple faith – being confident that God is who He says He is; realizing that we have only begun to know Him; resting assured that He will reward those who diligently seek Him, and believing that He will be found by those who desire Him.

As little kids we trust in the impossible, even to a fault… That is why Jesus Christ says that to enter into His kingdom we first must “become like children.” So allow your little-kid dreams to be awakened. Allow the pioneer within you to come alive – that inner spiritual explorer that longs to pursue a bigger-than-life action drama with God. The God of the Universe wants to write your life story. And when He does, you mustn’t expect a mediocre tale.”

Prayer Power
Heavenly Father, almighty God, we praise You as our great I AM. With You all things truly are impossible. Thank You for leading us to this series. Use these messages to make us strong and of good courage. Coach each of us to die daily to ourselves, to rise daily to new life in You, and to trade in our ordinary lives for extraordinary ones scripted by You. In Jesus name we pray and give You glory. Amen and hallelujah!

I apologize for not being able to write and send out devotionals on Thursday and Friday of last week. God has the floodgates of heaven open right now for me and I’ve run out of room to store all the blessings. I’ve had to prioritize and re-prioritize over the past week to keep up with all that’s new.

———————————

Today we continue with the 5th of 7 messages in the Chase the Lion series, namely “taking risks.” During this series, we’re exploring seven lion chasing skills: defying odds, facing fears, overcoming adversity, embracing uncertainty, taking risks, seizing opportunities, and looking foolish. The bulk of today’s messges comes from sermon notes by Mark Batterson, author of Chase the Lion.

The Domino Effect
On October 31st, 1517, a monk named Martin Luther walked up to the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany and posted a piece of paper on the church doors. His 95 theses attack the practice of indulgences–the selling of forgiveness by the church. Luther was put on trial. He was excommunicated from the church. But that one act of courage had a domino effect—it ignited the Protestant Reformation.

On April 18th, 1945, a factory owner named Oskar Schindler had a list of 1097 names manually typed—297 women and 800 men. He rescued them from Nazi Concentration Camps. Schindler lost everything. He died broke. But that one act of courage had a domino effect—a half-century later, there are more than 6,000 descendants of the Schindlerjuden.

On December 1st, 1951, a seamstress named Rosa Parks got on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Segregation laws required black passengers to give up their seat for white passengers. Rosa Parks refused to do it. She was arrested. She lost her job. But that one act of courage had a domino effect–it inspired a citywide boycott and a court battle. Within two years, bus segregation was ruled unconstitutional.

It is small acts of courage that change the course of history. Someone takes a risk and it has a domino effect. Now here’s the thing. We think about people like Martin Luther and Oscar Schindler and Rosa Parks in heroic terms. But they didn’t know they were making history when they were making history! They were just ordinary people taking risks! But when you take a risk you never know what kind of domino effect it is going to have.

During the Chase the Lion series we’re looking at one of the most courageous acts recorded in Scripture. An ancient warrior named Benaiah chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day and killed it.

Scripture goes on to list his military achievements and they are pretty impressive. He was one of the most decorated and celebrated warriors in Israel’s history. He was the captain of King David’s bodyguard. He was one of David’s thirty mighty men. In fact, Scripture says he was more honored than the other thirty. And Benaiah goes on to become Commander-in-Chief of Israel’s army.

But the genealogy of success can always be traced back to the risks we take. II Samuel 23 records three dominos. Benaiah took on two Moabites despite being outnumbered; he chased a lion despite snowy conditions; and he fought an Egyptian despite the fact that he was out armed. And those three risks had a domino effect.

As I reflect on my own life, I realize that most of the good things that have happened are the byproduct of a few risks. And the bigger the risks the bigger the rewards!

Buried Talent
Let me try to put risk in biblical context. We don’t tend to think of risk in spiritual terms, but risk is one dimension of righteousness.

In Matthew 25, Jesus describes the Kingdom of Heaven in terms of risk.

Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

If you really want to appreciate this parable you’ve got to realize that one talent was the ancient equivalent of twenty years of a day laborer’s salary. I don’t know about you, but if someone gives me a hundred years wages I don’t know if I ever take another risk. I’ve got enough money to last the rest of my life. You know what I’m saying? It had to tempting to play it safe. He had more to lose! But he also had more to gain!

Prayer Power
Loving Father, thank You for the measure of faith You have given to each of us. Guide each of us into a closer relationship with You so that our challenges will pale in comparison to how big our God is. Bless each of us with courage to take risks when Your Holy Spirit prompts us to action. Thank You Jesus. Amen and hallelujah!
